Soybean & Palm Oil Price Hike in Bangladesh: What You Need to Know | December 2025 Update (2026)

Edible Oil Prices Soar: What's Happening in Bangladesh?

It seems like the cost of cooking oil is on the rise, impacting households across Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspati Manufacturers Association has announced new retail prices for edible oils, effective tomorrow morning. Let's break down the details.

  • Soybean Oil: The price of a litre of bottled soybean oil is now set at Tk195, a Tk6 increase from the previous Tk189. Loose soybean oil also saw an increase of Tk7 per litre, now costing Tk176 compared to Tk169. A five-litre bottle of soybean oil will now cost Tk955, up from Tk922.

  • Palm Oil: The price of palm oil has seen a more significant jump, increasing by Tk16 per litre, bringing the new price to Tk166, up from Tk150.

But here's where it gets controversial... The association claims these adjustments align with the international market prices, made in consultation with the commerce ministry. However, the situation is a bit more complex than it seems.

Back on November 10th, refiners sought approval for a price hike, citing rising global market rates. They proceeded with the increase from November 24th without the commerce ministry's consent. This led to warnings from the Commerce Adviser, Sheikh Bashir Uddin, and a subsequent meeting between officials and traders on December 4th. Following these discussions, companies partially rolled back the increase.

And this is the part most people miss... Under the Control of Essential Commodities Act 1956, the commerce ministry has specific regulations. The Essential Goods Marketing and Distributor Appointment Order-2011 states that price adjustments by producers, refiners, and importers must be notified to the ministry's monitoring cell, district administrators, and upazila executive officers at least 15 days in advance. Traders claim they followed these procedures for the current increase.

In June 2021, a high-level committee was formed to align edible oil prices with international trends. This committee approved a slight price reduction in August after global prices fell. However, companies attempted another price increase in October without approval, leading to warnings from the commerce adviser.

What do you think? Do you believe the price increases are justified given the international market conditions? Or do you think there's more to the story? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
