Reunion with a 'Charlie Brown Christmas' Singer: Memories from 1965 (2026)

Can you believe it? The voice of a child who sang on the iconic 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' is now a 72-year-old! Let's dive into the story of Dave Willat, and how a simple choir practice turned into a timeless holiday classic. This is a story that proves the power of unexpected moments.

It was September 1965, and young Dave Willat, just 11 years old, was ready for his usual choir practice in San Rafael, California. Little did he know, he was about to be part of something extraordinary. Instead of hymns, he and his fellow choristers were whisked away to a San Francisco recording studio, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. There, they were handed the lyrics to 'Christmas Time Is Here' and told it was for a 'Peanuts' special.

And just like that, a holiday staple was born. Sixty years later, composer Vince Guaraldi's A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack remains one of the best-selling holiday and jazz albums of all time.

But here's where it gets controversial... The road to this classic wasn't exactly smooth. Initially, Guaraldi envisioned 'Christmas Time Is Here' as an instrumental piece. Producer Lee Mendelson made a last-minute decision to add lyrics, scribbling them on an envelope. The children didn't get it right away. Rehearsal outtakes reveal several mistakes and restarts, with the producer calling out instructions. A 2022 edition of the album even includes material from seven takes!

Willat recalls the comfortable atmosphere around the musicians, especially Guaraldi. Their choir director had a long-standing relationship with the jazz pianist and composer. Guaraldi had previously worked with the singers on another project, Vince Guaraldi at Grace Cathedral. Willat remembers Guaraldi's playful side, including skateboarding with the kids during breaks and even teaching him how to play pool.

After the recording session, the children returned home, bellies full of ice cream and $5 richer. But there was a problem: they were late to their church, and many parents were unaware of their whereabouts.

"They get there. The church is dark, no kids," Willat says. "Imagine that happening today!"

Some parents, understandably upset, refused to sign the necessary releases, which meant the initial session had to be scrapped. This led to two more recording sessions to get it right.

Willat, now in his 70s, hasn't done much public singing since childhood, admitting he's self-conscious. However, a recent reunion with other choir members at a Schulz Museum event changed his perspective.

"When we all got together again, hadn't seen these people for 50 years, we actually had a lot of fun," Willat said. "I really would like to get back into singing."

What do you think? Does this story change the way you listen to 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'? Do you think the parents overreacted, or were they justified in their concern? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
