Rugby League Star Reagan Campbell-Gillard Steps Up as London Broncos Captain
Reagan Campbell-Gillard, a former Kangaroo and State of Origin player, has been named captain of the London Broncos, marking a pivotal moment in the team's ambitious rebuild. With a new ownership group led by Darren Lockyer and Grant Wechsel, the club aims to return to the Super League in 2027. Campbell-Gillard, who played 245 NRL games and represented Australia in nine Tests, is no stranger to leadership, but the captaincy came as a surprise.
In his first interview since being named captain, Campbell-Gillard revealed his approach to leadership. He sought guidance from Isaah Yeo, a respected leader in the sport, who advised him to be authentic and only speak when necessary. Campbell-Gillard emphasized his intention to add his own unique style to the leadership lessons he's learned from various mentors.
"I spoke to ‘Yeoy' last week for some guidance," Campbell-Gillard shared with the Daily Telegraph. "He told me to speak up when I feel it's needed and not just talk for the sake of it. I won't be trying to copy anyone else. I've picked up little things from captains, coaches, and leaders throughout my career, and I'll add my own flavor to that."
The 32-year-old's appointment is a cornerstone of the club's rebuild under head coach Jason Demetriou. Broncos co-owner Wechsel praised Campbell-Gillard's commitment and dedication, stating that he was the obvious choice for the captaincy.
"From the moment we met Reagan, he bought into what we're trying to build in London," Wechsel said. "He's been terrific off the field and on the training paddock, and Jason was delighted to choose him as captain."
