Marc Marquez's Future with Ducati: A Balancing Act
Marc Marquez, the reigning MotoGP World Champion with Ducati, is confident in the team's ability to deliver the fastest bike for the final year of the 1000cc regulations in 2026. However, his future beyond that point remains uncertain as MotoGP transitions to 850cc machines and Pirelli tyres in 2027.
At 32 years old and the oldest rider on the grid, Marquez has the opportunity to claim a tenth world title next season, surpassing Valentino Rossi and tying with Giacomo Agostini's record. Despite his spectacular success with Ducati, Marquez has kept the door open for a potential return to Honda, the manufacturer where he spent most of his MotoGP career.
During Ducati's end-of-year celebrations, Marquez hinted at a possible return to Honda for 2027, stating that his priority is to be fast and win. He acknowledged that his future is uncertain, saying, 'Everything is still up in the air.'
When asked to rate his desire to remain at Ducati on a scale of zero to ten, Marquez replied, 'I'd say eight.' This suggests he is planning a normal two-year contract, having previously split from a four-year HRC contract and signed a single-season deal at Gresini before joining Ducati.
Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali confirmed that contract negotiations for 2027 will begin in February or March, emphasizing the team's positive relationship with Marquez. However, he noted that everything remains to be evaluated, including the future of Francesco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, and Marquez himself.
