In a heartening update, Hull FC's vice captain John Asiata has recently addressed his fans regarding his recovery and preparations for the upcoming season.
Asiata, who plays as a loose-forward, has assured everyone that he has not experienced any setbacks with his hamstring during this pre-season period. It's crucial for him to take this time off to ensure he is fully prepared for the challenges ahead in the new season.
At the age of 32, Asiata faced a significant hurdle when he underwent major surgery on his hamstring after suffering a second tear in August last year. Following the operation, he immediately began rehabilitation, which allowed him to return to full training just after Christmas, working hard alongside his teammates in the first-team squad.
However, the intense nature of this recovery meant that Asiata did not have an adequate break, and now the club is keeping a close eye on him to prevent any recurrence of the injuries that sidelined him for 13 of Hull's 30 competitive matches last season.
As he prepares for his second year donning the Black and White jersey, Asiata feels positive about his current state and is committed to being wise about his training as they gear up for the long season ahead. "I’m doing pretty good," he expressed in an interview with Hull Live. "Mentally, I feel strong, and physically, my body is improving. There are still a few more things on my checklist before I get the all-clear, but overall, I'm in a favorable position."
He went on to clarify, "There’s been no setback. It’s more about fine-tuning now, and I realize I didn’t take that break when I should have, so I’m making sure to do that now. I’ve accomplished a lot during training, which felt great to be back involved, but I noticed some fatigue setting in, likely because I didn’t allow myself enough time off.
"I’m giving my body the rest it needs, and I am hopeful that I can achieve the targets necessary to ensure I’m ready to go."
Regarding his mindset, Asiata reflected, "I don’t think I dealt with the injury and the surgery as well as I could have initially. I tended to brush it aside, pretending everything was fine. The longer you stay inactive, the more challenging it becomes mentally. I jumped straight into rehab without taking a breather, but one key lesson I've learned is not to rush my return. This time, I want to come back completely confident, with no doubts lingering in my mind.
"I want to rejoin the team knowing that I am truly ready, whether that's in round one or round two – it all hinges on whether I meet those necessary criteria. As it stands, there are no setbacks, and I’m feeling optimistic about achieving those goals."
Asiata candidly admitted, "To be honest, it’s been a tough journey. It was disappointing not to conclude my first season with the Black and Whites alongside the team. I understood our potential and what we could have achieved together, and that realization stung. However, I believe I have reached a point where I can accept the injury, acknowledge my age, and come to terms with everything that has transpired since my arrival. Now, I can focus on what lies ahead.
"My priority is to ensure that I am in the best shape to contribute to the team and help elevate the club back to its rightful place in the standings. My aspiration now is to be on the field as much as possible. Every player shares this ambition. Nobody enjoys watching from the sidelines while their teammates face challenges, especially during tough moments; you want to be in the thick of it. For me, it’s essential to be able to support my team and play my role in helping us outperform last year's efforts.
"We have an incredible group, and the camaraderie within the squad is remarkable. If I can fulfill my responsibilities and make a significant contribution, then I will consider this year a success. That, ultimately, is what matters most to me."
