A chilling reality: A suspect in a femicide case has been apprehended after months of evading the authorities. This arrest, announced on December 13, 2025, marks a significant development in a case that has cast a shadow over the community since October 2024.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) successfully tracked and apprehended the suspect in Busia town, near the Kenya-Uganda border. It appears the individual was attempting to remain hidden by working at a local business. The meticulous investigation involved intelligence-led operations, inter-county coordination, and detailed forensic analysis, demonstrating the dedication of the homicide detectives and regional officers involved. The suspect is now in custody as the police finalize the processing procedures, preparing for arraignment.
"Relentless investigations and forensic leads finally closed in on the suspect. Detectives trailed and arrested him in Busia town near the Kenya–Uganda border, where he had been working at a cereal distribution shop while hiding in plain sight," stated the DCI.
The suspect is accused of the murder of a woman whose body was discovered in a residential building in Thika town in October 2024, triggering an extensive manhunt. After the alleged crime, the suspect reportedly went into hiding, moving across different regions to avoid capture.
But here's where it gets controversial... Records from civil society and research organizations reveal that 2024 witnessed a grim milestone, recording the highest number of femicide cases in Kenya's history, with at least 170 women killed. The data indicates that between September and November 2024 alone, there were 97 femicide cases, averaging more than one killing per day. Looking at the bigger picture, over 600 women were murdered between 2016 and 2024, based on an analysis of over 900 cases drawn from media and court records.
The data further indicates that intimate partners and family members were responsible for approximately 77 percent of femicide cases during the period under review. The majority of victims were women aged between 18 and 35 years, while the suspects were predominantly men within the same age group. Most of these tragic events occurred within homes, accounting for about 72 percent of the cases, with public spaces accounting for a smaller percentage. Nairobi, Kiambu, and Nakuru counties reported the highest number of femicide-related killings. Court records also show that it took an average of more than four years for femicide cases to reach a verdict after being filed.
